SO 52 SE Upper Warryfield and
House and cottage. House: early C17 with later alterations; cottage: early/mid C19.
Coursed squared stone and timber frame, and rubblestone with slate roofs. End
stacks, that to right of stone, projecting, and probably added mid C17, all flues
of brick. House to right, lower cottage to left. House is of 2 units, central-
staircase, plan; 2 storeys, skylit attic, and cellar. 3-window range of C20
2-light casements flanking a single-light, all set in a timber-framed 1st floor of
narrow upright panels, 3 panels high. Stone ground floor has door to centre right
with stone lintel and evidence of altered window openings, now with 2 C20 2-light
casements and single-light to far left, all under C19 brick cambered heads.
Similar fenestration and framing to rear with door up steps and cellar door down
steps both under stone Tudor-arched chamfered lintels. Interior: chamfered spine
beams; straight-flight staircase, probably early C18, to 1st floor, is set between
2 timber-framed partitions. Probably original winder stair to attic. Large open
fireplace with stone jambs, to left room, the brick arch an early C19 modification.
Stone Tudor-arch fireplace to right room. Some plank doors and hinges to 1st floor
and attic are probably original. Early C19 iron grate and chimney in attic. Double-
trenched-purlin roof with massive clasped principals. Wide floor boards in attic.
Cottage is of 1-window range, 2-light casements that to ground floor larger and with
top-lights under a brick camber lintels. Door and further casements to rear.
Interior has plank doors.
