Water mill. Probably late C18 to early C19 with later alterations. Sand-
stone rubble with brick dressings. Welsh slate and tiled roofs with brick
stacks. L-plan with main range aligned north-west/south-east and subsidiary
arm to north-east at south end. Two to three storeys with attics. South
elevation has tall gable front to left. To left side of gable are two round-
headed cast-iron glazing bar casements, one to the first and one to the second
floor. Both have brick heads. In the top of the gable is a window under a
cambered head. Entry to left side with cambered head and ledged door is
approached across foot bridge. Lower late C19 right part is remodelled.
Two casements, one to each floor, both late C20 and with two lights. Cresting
to tiled roof. Overlapping the two parts is a large cast-iron water wheel
with a diameter of about 12 feet on each visible spoke of which is inscribed
in raised lettering: C HODGES LUDLOW FOUNDRY 1858. Sluice gates are operated
by wheels from footbridge. Interior has C18 staircase of two flights with
turned balusters and moulded handrails. Drive shaft from water wheel with
cast iron crown wheel and pinion to ground floor. First floor has earlier
wooden pinion, fielded late C18 panelled door and ex situ Coakbrookdale cast-
iron fireplace with swags, urns and eared jambs. Attic has cat-walk, wooden
pulleys, drums and chains. The trusses have queen-posts and raking struts.
Buckton Mill is said to have last operated in 1947 and to have been built in
1798.
