Description

EARL STONHAM MIDDLEWOOD GREEN
TM 16 SW
2/112 Venn's Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse, mid C16 core with alterations of several periods. 2 storeys.
Double-pile plan; the C16 rear range mainly timber-framed and plastered with
some C20 remodelling in oak framing with red brick-nogging; the late C17 front
range remodelled C19 with plastered brick underbuilding. Hipped slated C19
roof to front range; pantiled roof to rear range. C19 small-pane sashes at
1st storey, C20 small-pane casements below. Some C20 oak diamond mullioned
windows. The rear range has rare C16 features: the hall consists of a smoke
bay linked to a long bay with sleeping loft above, and the open truss between
them is of base-cruck form. Substantial unmoulded framing. The walls were
raised and a new roof built over the rear range in C19. Included despite later
alterations because of the rare structural and plan form of the C16 range.
