House and shops. C15 altered C18, originally one building with 'The Sanctuary'
(qv High Street, item 7/56). Timber-framed building refronted, the High Street
elevation painted brick, the south elevation red brick with grey headers and some
sandstone ashlar. Half-hipped tiled roof. 3 bay building built end on to road.
2 storeys and attics, 2 windows. Brick modillion eaves cornice. High Street
elevation has 1 tripartite sash and 1 casement. South elevation has 2 sashes with
16 panes and 1 blank. 2 cambered windows and 2 cambered doors. Interior said to
contain 2 C15 crown post trusses dividing the 3 bays of the roof. Heavy wide flat
ceiling joists to lower storey and part of a C17 dog leg staircase with squat
moulded baluster and square newel post with moulded knop. First floor has C17
panelling with carved diamond pattern and ground floor has painted plank and muntin
panelling. First floor has chamfered spine beam with lamb's tongue stop. (See
VCH Vol VII, p 148).
