Farmbuilding range to south-east of Culpits Farmhouse

GV
II

Farmbuilding range. C17 and late C18 with mid C19 additions. Red brick with some flintwork and pantile and Roman tile roofs. U-plan. C17 barn at southern end of eastern arm is of brick and flint construction with some tumbled-in brickwork. Door on western gable and blocked openings within later lean-to extension. Later window in eastern gable. INTERIOR has roof with principles with collars, 2 tiers of butt purlins, the upper with windbraces, and coupled rafters. To north a lower range, probably late C18, of loose boxes, root store and cart shed. This continues to west as base of U-plan with possible cowshed range which has stable doors. Western arm has taller mid C19 barn with double door to west and smaller door to yard. INTERIOR has king-post roof with 2 tiers of purlins. To south the U-plan is completed by a mid C19 stud unit comprising tack room, foaling box, room for stud groom with fireplace, range and chimney, and set of stables with timber and wrought-iron partitions. Walling of random brick and flint blank towards yard but with 2 sets of double doors and a single door and 4 2-light casements towards west. INTERIOR of stables: timber and wrought iron partitions.
A range of farm buildings which forms a group with Culpits farmhouse (qv) and is of similar dates, illustrating the changes in farming from C17-C19 when, in the latter period, the farm appears to have become a specialist stud facility.
