GV II
Pair of semi-detached estate workers' cottages. Circa 1860, by E.G. Bruton, for
Christ Church College, Oxford. Squared and coursed limestone, rock-faced, with
slate roofs and stone chimneys. In rustic Gothick style with steep roof pitches
and pointed arches over narrow lights. 2 storeys, 2-bay front to road. Right bay
is gabled and has 3-light ground floor window with stop-chamfered stone
mullions, pair of single lights to first floor, and arched vent slit in gable.
Right return of this bay has arched doorway, small round window below eaves, and
2-light casement in catslide semi-dormer. Gable beyond is similar to front but
with ground floor altered to C20 metal casement. Left bay front, has 2 2-light
windows with stop-chamfered stone mullions to ground floor, and single light in
gabled semi-dormer above. Left gable end is similar to other gabled bays but
with round vent in gable. Wing to rear of left bay has catslide porch projection
with arched door and buttresses. Part of a row of 3 pairs of cottages and a
lodgings house.
