4/17 Gymnasium to east
of Hartford Hall
Stable block, now gymnasium. North and west ranges early Cl9, enlarged with
conversion of yard into covered exercise yard 1875, dated with initials A.E.B.
(Augustus Edward Burdon) on pediment. Front tooled-and-margined ashlar,
returns squared stone; graduated Lakeland slate roof to north and west ranges,
Welsh slates to remainder.
North elevation 2 storeys, 1 + 3 + 1 bays. Plinth, rusticated quoins.
Slightly-projecting pedimented centre has tall round arch flanked by lower
segmental archeswith 4-pane sash windows above; all arches now blocked, with
later windows inserted. Circular moulded panel in pediment encloses shield
with date and initials. End bays have 4-pane sashes; hip-ended roof with
stepped-and-corniced ridge stacks. 6-bay returns show C20 casement windows in
Interior: Former covered yard has balcony all round, stepped up over former
entrance arch on north, with shaped cast-iron bars and moulded handrail.
Strapped king-post truss roof with rooflights.
