PARISH OF EDENSOR CALTON LEES
SK 26 NW

Russian Cottage
II
Cottage. 1855, a copy of a model of a Russian farm sent to the
Duke of Devonshire by the Tsar. Coursed squared sandstone and
timber in the form of logs laid horizontally. Steeply pitched
stone slate roof with three ashlar stacks in the pitch of the
roof and one ashlar ridge stack. Cruciform plan. Single
storey. The north arm is of stone, the rest of logs crossing at
the angles. The three gable ends all similar, with elaborately
fretted bargeboards continuing below the eaves line and with a
collar and central pendant. Pair of white painted casement
windows with panelled shutters, dentilled pediments and
decorative aprons. The logs are left with a natural finish and
the joinery is white painted. In the south east angle a lean-to
porch with balustrade and plank door. Stone wing to north has
various casement windows and a plank door.
