GV II

House. Mid C18. Regular coursed lias with C20 plain tiled roof. 3-unit plan. 2
storeys, 2-window range of casements with leaded lights; those at first floor
are probably C18 with wood lintels. Brick stacks at ridge and end. C20 entrance
at rear. Inscribed tablet between first floor windows, "In this cottage there
lived from 1783 to 1789, William Carey, Shoemaker, Schoolmaster, Preacher,
Scholar and Missionary Pioneer. While beneath this roof be conceived and
developed the great missionary idea that has changed India and awakened
world-wide movements. He ministered to the baptist church in this village for
over 4 years. Born at Paulespury, 17th August 1761, he died 9th June 1834 and
his body was buried at Serampore, India. "Expect great things from God. Attempt
great things for God. He being dead yet speaketh".
