Garden steps. 1848-1860, by John Bateman. Dressed stone, chamfered
ashlar to back panel with vermiculated panel to base. In 3 tiers,
5 flights and 4 landings, taking path from house to the lower garden
level. Broad flights running in symmetrical opposing directions; low
ramped balustrades and squat, moulded, panelled end piers. Back panel
retaining wall with round-arch niche and fretted balustrade over; shallow
circular stone vase on plinth set in front of recess. The steps front
Bateman's personal study and therefore presumably marks the intended
debut of the main perambulation of his grounds, elaborately laid out
and including Chinese Garden, avenues and pinetum.
