Includes: Nos.3 AND 4 CITY WALLS.
3 town houses, now restaurant. Probably 1780s, altered. Brown
brick, partly in Flemish bond; grey slate roof. South
extension 1990-91.
The east face to Abbey Green has a door of 2 fielded panels
above 2 flush panels with simple overlight in timber
pilastered case with frieze and simple hood. Flush sashes with
painted stone sills and cambered heads, some of gauged brick;
2 blank openings and a 12-pane sash to the first storey, four
12-pane sashes to the second storey and a 6-pane sash to the
third storey; a rendered pediment gable to the north wing. The
north face to City Walls has 2 doors and 2 casements, under
repair when inspected, to the second storey and, to the third
storey, 2 small-pane sashes and a small fixed light. The west
side has a round-arched 22-pane stair window.
INTERIOR: was in course of extensive repair when inspected.
The open-string open-well stair has shaped brackets and an
ornate iron balustrade. Embrasure shutters; door of 6 flush
panels; arched opening to stair hall. Windows are replaced
facsimile.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Weston's Map of Chester published by James
Hunter 1789 shows No.1 Abbey Green and Nos.3 and 4 City Walls
as separate properties with, except for the later linking bay,
the same ground plan as in 1989.
