ruins of St. Catherine
I Chapel Guildford)
Chapel. Built shortly before 1317 by Richard de Wauncey, Rector of St
Nicholas, on the site of an earlier chapel. Sandstone rubble with grey
ashlar stone dressings. Now roofless. Rectangular 45½ feet x 20½ feet
internally, three bays. Buttressed, originally with pinnacles on north
and south sides, taller quoined turret to north west corner. Arched
windows in Decorated style, with hood mouldings. Central window on first
floor of north and south sides converted into additional doorways, possibly
in the late C18. Large window to east.

The chapel was disused by the 1540's, although restored in 1793 by Robert
Austen.

The chapel is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
