Group of 7 headstones and 5 footstones
from approx.17 to approx. 25 metres
south of Church of St Giles
GV II
Row of 6 monumental headstones on north-south line, and another offset to the
west. Mostly mid C18. All limestone. Commemorating (from left to right):-
(1) Elizabeth Stone (d.1748): consoled pediment, carving with cherub head and
hourglass; shaped footstone to rear carved with radiant hourglass and
inscribed "Es 1748"
(2) A.Syme, widow [date illegible]: shaped top; matching footstone to rear
inscribed "AS 1810";
(3) Sarah Syms (d.1762): small stone, consoled pediment, carved panel with jolly
cherub under radiant sun; matching footstone to rear inscribed "SS 1762";
(4) Richard Symes [date not visible]: white limestone, small, elaborately shaped
top carved with hourglass framed by fans; matching footstone to rear
inscribed "RS 1753";
(5) Richard Symes junior, son of Richard and Sarah Symes (d.1756): similar to
(4) but with crossed tools over the hourglass; Matching footstone to rear
inscribed "RS 1756";
(6) William Symes [date illegible]: shaped and scrolled top.
Offset to the west between 1. and 2. above:
(7) William Constable (d.1770): shaped top, carved with cherub and book
