GV II*

Memorial. 1888. By Herbert A Gribble, architect and W Charles
May, sculptor. Dressed granite with bronze fittings and
sculpture. Octagonal stepped base to square panelled plinth
with entablature, ramped in to tall panelled chest with
entablature and further ramped in to entablature of base for
bronze of Britannia with lion. Front has crowned shield with
drapes, panel depicting the Armada above, the inscription: "HE
BLEW WITH HIS WINDS AND THEY WERE SCATTERED" and the chest
with a wreathed medallion with head of presumably the Spanish
admiral, Sedonia. There is a low perimeter fence with granite
plinth and chains between turned cast-iron stanchions.
One of a very fine sequence of memorials and monuments on the
Hoe.
