Villa, now hotel. Mid C19 with later additions and
alterations, including those of late C20; altered and
remodelled late C19 by John Middleton. Stucco over brick with
slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys (on basements to garden facade), 4-bay
centre with pediment over 2 central windows and 2-storey,
3-window bows to outer bays. Cornices over each floor and to
blocking course. Central solid portico with Doric columns and
piers, 6-panel door with plain transom light. Flanking
2-and-a-half storey wings, gables treated as open pediments
over arched windows, 1 + 1 window below. Windows are mainly
1/1 sashes in moulded architraves, those to bows are curved
(some casements); to left range, ground floor a tripartite
window. Verandah to right part.
Later 2-storey projection on left-hand wing; 2-and-a-half
storey projection on right hand wing and a 2-and-a-half
storey, 3-bay extension to right.
Garden front: the symmetrical rhythm of the elevation is
clearer here than on the entrance front.
INTERIOR: entrance hall has colonnade of paired Doric columns;
black and white marble floor. Open-well staircase has fluted
square columns. Ground-floor rooms mainly face garden: room to
right has egg-and-dart cornice, 'lobby' with 2 Ionic columns
and responds; panelled partition doors lead through to centre
room with Ionic columns into bay, acanthus modillion cornice;
marble fireplace with shell motif. Room to left: oak panelled,
fireplace with pulvinated frieze. Doors: mainly panelled with
glazing and margin-lights in tooled architraves. First floor
has egg-and-dart cornice, dado rail. Mainly 6-panel doors.
HISTORICAL NOTE: John Middleton was architect of several
churches in Cheltenham and Charlton Kings.
