Symmetrical terrace of 4 houses, now shops and bank. c1820
with later additions and alterations including conversion to
shops probably c1845-76 and mainly early C20 shop fronts.
Stucco over brick with concealed roof, stucco end and
party-wall stacks; ashlar ground-floor shop fronts and
wrought-iron balconies.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 26 first-floor windows, with attic storey
to right 9 window range. Breakforwards to end 2 windows, 18th,
21st-23rd and 26th windows. End breakforward has pilaster
strips embellished with scrolled foliage. Right breakforward
has 4 fluted Ionic pilasters, surmounted by continuous
entablature over second floor and with bands of anthemion and
palmette motifs between first and second floors. First-floor
windows have tooled architraves to 2 windows at left, to 18th
and 26th windows; all have floating cornices. 3 first-floor
centre windows to centre of 9-window range have floating
cornices on consoles. Low parapets and copings to ends which
partly conceal attics. Parapet to centre has raised panels,
those to centre have wreaths and surmounted by scrolls. 6/6
sashes except to attic which has 3/6 sashes. Ground-floor shop
fronts: to left has Corinthian columns between plate-glass
windows, with continuous entablature, entrance to left angle
has shouldered and tooled architrave and pediment with double,
glazed doors; then shop front with Ionic columns and
entablature; the next has Corinthian columns and entablature;
then glazed shop front; 9-window range has central entrance
with distyle Roman Doric portico and surmounting acroteria,
and continuous entablature. Left return: 3 storeys and attic

to mansard, 7 first-floor windows. Similar stucco detailings
include end and off-centre right pilasters with ornate scroll
decoration to panels, off-centre left Doric pilaster; crowning
entablature and low parapet. Ground-floor (to banking hall)
has similar ashlar Corinthian half-columns. First and second
floors have 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Nos 37 and 41 have balconies with curved
quarterings in square. Steps up have railings and scraper to
No.41.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Promenade was laid out in 1818 as a
tree-lined drive to the Sherborne Spa (on the site of the
Queen's Hotel qv) from the Colonnade in the High Street, by
1826 it was a carriage drive with spacious gravelled walk on
each side. Although originally on either side were 'rows of
elegant houses', by 1845 when Rowe wrote his Cheltenham Guide
(published 1850), he noted that 'nearly the whole of the
left-hand side .. is devoted to professional or business
establishments'. Buildings on the NW were the first to be
developed. The upper floors to No.33 in particular form a very
well-proportioned and richly-detailed neo-Classical design.
Forms a continuous terrace with Nos 21-31 (odd), Promenade
(qv).
