House, formerly rectory. C17; remodelled circa late C19; extended circa early C19; extended again later C19. Sandstone rubble, partly roughcast. Clay plain tile and slate roofs with gabled ends. Stone lateral, axial and gable-end stacks with brick shafts.
PLAN: C17 3-room and cross-passage plan house, its low end to the left [S] with a lateral stack at the back, and the hall and parlour now one room [drawing room]. In about the late C18 an outshut containing a staircase was built at the rear [W]; in about the early C19 a large L-shaped plan service range was built on the left [S] end and a 1-room plan extension was added to the north [right] end, which was extended at the back [W] later in the C19 to provide a new entrance.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4:6 window east front. Main 6-window range set back on right with 4- 12- and 16-pane sashes, casement with margin panes and Victorian canted bay on ground floor to right; doorway on left with flush-panel and glazed door and gabled open porch with lattice sides. Projecting on left 2-storey service wing with small 2-light C19 casements. Rear [W], the original range at centre is roughcast with slate roof, projecting lateral stack with weathered set-offs partly enclosed within later gabled bay with C20 stone window frame and with late C18 or early C19 3-light stair window to left with iron casements; early C19 stone range set back on right [S] and later C19 twin-gabled extension on left [N].
INTERIOR: C18 and C19 joinery including panelled doors, cupboards and chimneypieces with iron grates and circa late C18 staircase with stick balusters, moulded handrail and tall Tuscan column newel-post. C17 deeply chamfered ceiling beams on first floor. Roof of main range has C17 queen-post truss and large through-purlins.
Garraway House is a multi-phase house with substantial remains of the original C17 3-room and cross-passage plan house, which was extended in the late C18 and early and late in the C19.
