Description

NEVILL HOLT

405/0/10004 Font in garden of Font House
15-JAN-02

GV II

Garden feature, probably once a fountain basin. Late C15/early C16. Stone. Square basin on pedestal base. On the four sides are carved coats of arms, bulls heads and Latin numerals. These last are difficult to decipher but the coats of arms are those of the Nevill family and the bulls heads are their crest. The Nevills inherited Nevill Holt after 1474. This feature stands in the centre of a walled garden formerly part of those of Nevill Holt Hall (qv) and on the axis of a principal reception room. This feature, known to be in its present position for the last 70 years is likely to have been positioned here in the C19 after the Cunard family bought Nevill Holt and made changes to the estate.
This feature forms part of a significant group with Nevill Holt Hall and the Garden Walls, etc.(qv).
