East walled garden, gateways and
aviary, north-west of Ascot Place

GV II

Walled garden, gateways and aviary, formerly part of large
kitchen garden. Walls and gateways C18 with C19 and C20
repairs, aviary late C19. Red brick in Flemish bond, iron
aviary. Large rectangular plan, with a gateway set centrally
in the north, east and south walls. Walls are approximately 3
metres high and have a brick on edge coping. North and south
gateways brick quoin gatepiers either side of rubbed
brick-arched opening with keystone. Band of flints above arch
with curved brick coping. Moulded stone copings with ball
finials on top of gatepiers. Eastern gateway similar but
without ball finials. Aviary is of decorative open ironwork.
Hexagonal plan, ogee roof in 2 stages with ball and spike
finial.
The East walled garden together with the Greenhouse Garden and
Bothy Cottage, west and east yards (qqv), adjoin the stable
buildings on the north (qv) and form part of the former large
kitchen gardens and cattleyard to Ascot Place.
