Description

392/0/10210 IRVINE STREET
18-DEC-03 War Memorial at St Mary's Church

II
War memorial. Red sandstone cross rising from an octagonal ashlar plinth, with a decorative collar between the cross and its shaft. The front of the cross head carries a carved laurel wreath, and the base of the memorial carries an inscription which reads ' LEST WE FORGET. In memory of those who fell in the Great War 1914-1919.' The inscription continues on the lower part of the base ' God is Our Refuge and Strength 'and' This cross was erected by the Friends of St Mary's Church Edgehill'.

The memorial is notable for dating the end of the war to 1919, for although the conflict ended with the signing of the Armistice on the 11th November 1918 at Compiegne, the Peace Treaty with Germany was not signed until the 28th June 1919 at Versailles.

This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 27 January 2017.
