Description

HENNOCK

1633/0/10007 CHURCH ROAD
17-APR-07 War Memorial

II
War Memorial. Mid C20. Rough hewn granite stone cross and shaft upon tapering plinth, which stands on a roughly square base. The cross head is in the style of a Celtic wheel headed cross. The inscriptions on the plinth are in lead lettering and reads as follows:
'In loving memory of the men of Hennock and Teign Village/
who gave their lives in the Great War./1914-19' (Eleven names are listed).
And on the shaft:
'1939-45:' (Six names are listed).

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials are the most vivid reminder of the losses suffered during World Wars I and II. As commemorative structures they have strong connections to their local communities. This simple granite cross stands as an arresting monument within the village of Hennock and commemorates the men of the parish who died in both the First and Second World Wars.
