End terrace house. Early C18 with C20 additions. Possibly by John Strahan, area including Kingsmead Street and Square was laid out in 1727.
MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, slate roof.
PLAN: Tall and deep house with entry to left and narrow wing to right, all that remains of extensive terrace destroyed by bombing in 1942.
EXTERIOR: Three storeys and attic, four windows front, all twelve-pane sashes in moulded architraves and sills. First and second floor levels moulded cornice, and full attic storey has only two windows and simple parapet. Ground floor has shopfront with recessed door with margin panes, and, to left, C20 panelled door under a transom light, all this to small cornice, differs from shopfront described in former list. Full height plain pilasters at each end, broken forward at cornice levels, to right are remains of channelled pilaster, remains of adjacent property, now destroyed. Stack to left, shared with No.2 (qv). Returned end plain rendered, and rear, in squared rubble, has narrow two-bay gabled full height wing with twelve-pane sashes to slender bars, main wide-span ridge roof sweeps down to plain eaves, and are other sashes, including deep stair sash.
INTERIOR: Not inspected. Former list refers to open string staircase with turned balusters and ramped handrail, fielded panelling and shutters in upper rooms, architrave doorcases, and moulded cornices. Loss of this street unfortunate, as, on evidence of this survival, overall quality of presentation was high. Property abuts the rear of Rosewell House (qv).
