Description

CHURCH STREET Widcombe
(West side)

Fountain at Widcombe Manor House
11/08/72

GV I

Garden fountain. Thought now to be late C19 copy of a C15 fountain. Bronze, limestone. Four of the cherubs were stolen and bronze copies made from an almost identical fountain in Tetbury. Small bronze figure on shell rises from higher of two shallow basins, with central baluster carried on Rococo with four small mermaids, and on four turtles as feet, all set to square stone block centred to circular pool, approx 3m diameter, with raised surround of stone curbing containing narrow cobbled band of paving. Fountain centred to south front of Manor House (qv), with steps and stone balustrading (qv) to west. Probably installed as part of redesign of garden layout by Rolfe and Peto in 1928 (drawings in RIBA). See photographs of previous garden layout without fountain.
