House, now flats. c1777-1784 with C19 and C20 alterations. By John Wood the Younger.
MATERIALS: Refaced in limestone ashlar to front (following bomb damage in WWII), rubble and coursed squared stone to basement, re-faced in ashlar to right flank wall, ashlar and rubble to rear; double pile parapeted mansard roof hipped to right, Welsh Slate to front and rear, with coped party wall to front left with ashlar stack shared with No.2 Catharine Place (qv), two ashlar stacks to rear roof with some early clay pots on coped wall to centre and coped party wall to rear right adjacent to No.2 Catharine Place (qv): covering to flat roof of single bay to right not visible.
PLAN: House at south-east corner of Catharine Place breaking forward slightly to form terminating pavilion to terrace has plan interlocking with No.2 Catharine Place, with four-window front and seven-window rear elevation; bay to right (S) set back slightly and of different design from main front (cf. Nos 7, 8 and 15 Catharine Place (qv) at north-east, north-west and south-west angles of square); entrance front to right side.
EXTERIOR: Front to Catharine Place is three storeys, attic and basement; four-window range. First floor has to left three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with friezes and moulded cornices over and moulded stone sills on console brackets, to right one plate glass horned sash in plain reveal with stone sill. Second floor has to left three plate glass horned sashes in splayed ovolo moulded architraves with stone sills, similar window in plain reveal with stone sill to right. Ground floor has four plate glass horned sashes in splayed reveals with stone sills. Basement has three C20 windows in plain reveals with stone sills, plank door with single pane overlight in plain reveal. Pennant area steps with C20 handrail. Band course over ground floor continues to set back portion to right; modillion eaves cornice and coped parapet, upper mouldings of cornice only continued to right. Right side entrance front, first floor has two plate glass horned sashes in plain reveals with stone sills, small opening with ventilation grille with stone sill to centre. Second floor has two similar windows with two openings with ventilation grilles to centre. Ground floor has one similar sash and similar two-pane window and similar ventilation grille; six-panel door with flush beaded and fielded panels with single pane overlight and three concrete steps in pedimented Doric doorcase. Plinth, continued to blind wall of single storey rear extension to right; band course over ground floor; moulded eaves cornice and coped parapet continued from front right.
Rear elevation has C20 metal casement windows; lead hopperhead and downpipe to centre right.
INTERIOR: Top floor flat inspected by Bath Council1993. It has been completely modernised except for an C18 fireplace in the rear room.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: Attached iron railings and gate with pointed heads on limestone bases.
