Grotto. Early/mid C19.
MATERIALS: Tufa rock.
PLAN: Semicircular plan.
STYLE: Picturesque style.
EXTERIOR: Constructed cave with semicircular arched doorway flanked by similar open arches faces small pool. Encircled by path between cave and outer rim of rocks. Interior simple and rough.
HISTORY: The grotto was built at a cost of £1000 shortly before the General¿s death (1858), and described as `a place where in the summer heat the most delicious quietitude and repose may be enjoyed¿. Part of General Andrews¿s elaborate villa garden complex laid out at `Vellore¿.
