A First World War memorial made by A Ruscombe Emery, stonemason, dating from about 1921; altered after the Second World War to commemorate the lost of that conflict.

MATERIALS: the memorial is made from local stone.

DESCRIPTION: the structure, which is circa 3.5m high, takes the form of a cross with chamfered arms and flared ends, on a tapering shaft. This is set into a square plinth, which is inscribed IN MEMORY OF / THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / AND OF THE MEN / FROM THIS PARISH / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE, with the names of the Fallen beneath inscribed Maltese crosses to the flanking faces. This plinth stands on a four-stepped platform, the uppermost step of which is inscribed 2ND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945, and with the name of the serviceman who fell in that conflict. The inscriptions are picked out in black paint.

SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the memorial stands in a reserved semicircular area gravelled area, around which the roadside boundary wall diverts. To the front, four stone posts with domed finials to their tops form the uprights for a chain-link fence.

History

The memorial was erected after the First World War to commemorate the nine men of the parish of Broadway who lost their lives during the conflict. It was made by Mr A Ruscombe Emery, a local stonemason. After 1945, the memorial was altered to commemorate the serviceman from the village who had died in the Second World War. The structure was cleaned and repaired in 2013.

Reasons for Listing

Broadway War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a sombre but elegant memorial with good inscriptions;
* Group value: with the listed buildings on the north side of Broadway Road, particularly Church House, the village’s former Congregational Chapel.
