Summary

First World War memorial, 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

Description

First World War memorial, 1920, with later additions for the Second World War.

DESCRIPTION: Kimbolton War Memorial is located on the High Street, just outside of the churchyard of the church of St Andrew (Grade I). The memorial consists of a stone cross on a large plinth of Ketton limestone above a step. There are two incised stone tablets, one on the south face and one on the east, and the inscriptions are painted black. The tablet on the south face reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ FOR FREEDOM AND RIGHT. 1914-1919 (29 NAMES). The tablet on the east face reads: 1939-1945 (5 NAMES).

The memorial is enclosed by a low brick wall and timber fence.

History

On 31 January 1919 a committee was created to determine the wishes of the Kimbolton community for commemoration of the fallen from the First World War. The committee decided on a memorial cross design by Inskip Ladds ARIBA, a well-known local architect. It was built at a cost of £180, which was raised by public subscription, and unveiled on 20 January 1920 by the Bishop of Ely.

In 2016 a project was undertaken to clean and repoint the war memorial, with funding from War Memorials Trust.

Reasons for Listing

Kimbolton War Memorial, standing just outside the churchyard of the church of St Andrew, is listed at Grade II for the following reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20;
* Architectural interest: a well-executed memorial stone cross;
* Group value: with the church of St Andrew (Grade I).
