5-bay S approach front, with irregular 2-gabled rear with
attic floor. Harl pointed rubble. Later 19th century gabled
porch masks centre door in S front flanked by small
lattice-pane windows; substantial centre ridge stack.
2-gabled E elevation with 3-light sash windows in ground and

panes. Catslide roof to 1 gable. Later 19th century rear (N)

local slate roof replaces original thatch.

Statement of Interest

Elizabeth Grant in her memoirs implies that Polchar was

another cottage designed by herself and her sister Jane (see

Croft) and built by her father for the estate game keeper,

with kennels to rear. She describes both heather thatch and lattice-panes glazing. James Martineau, Unitarian divine,

lived at The Polchar for 5 months of the year from 1877-1900.

He added porch and N wing.
