Description

Later 18th century in origin, existing buildings mainly 19th
century. L-shaped grain mill with kiln at E, whinstone rubble
walling. Windows mainly to S elevation overlooking Shirmers
Burn. Single-light sharp arrised openings, some with
fixed-frame 6-pane glazed windows. Corrugated-iron roofs.
Iron overshot waterwheel at E gable in rubble wheel pit.
Decaying timber sluice mechanism, lade now diverted away from
wheel. Smaller cast-iron wheel to S side of kiln, formerly
providing power to kiln bellows.
Internally much of the mill machinery survives including
gearing for 3 sets of stones in original wooden casing and
sack hoists. The kiln too is almost complete and retains its
iron fire-proof door and some perforated tiles of drying
floor.

Statement of Interest

Remarkable for the survival of most of the internal gearing

and machinery.
