Description

Earlier/mid 19th century, apparently re-modelled circa 1871

by Charles Howitt. L-plan laundry, converted (presumably

circa 1924 by J Laird of Glasgow) to form 2 cottages. Gabled

2-storey (cutdown) angle tower with single storey north and

west wings, 2-storey parallel former mangle room adjoins

north wall of latter. Snecked and stugged pink ashlar with

polished dressings. Tower has angle buttresses at lower

stage, 2 narrow east-facing lights at ground (otherwise

bipartites face east and south), and off-set upper stage; depressed-arched door to 3-bay west wing and in gabled porch

of 2-bay north wing. Sash windows mostly with 8-pane glazing

pattern. Saw-toothed skews; wall-head and axial stacks; slate

roofs.

Sheds (? laundry coal stores) built in to bank at north west;

2 segmental-arched openings, timber gates with ventilation

slits.

Statement of Interest

Category B because of relationship with mansion.

Tower was originally 3 storeys; Top floor removed probably

circa 1924. Picturesquely sited above north avenue.
