Description

Irregular quadrangular-plan burial ground enclosing mostly

stone monuments, many with good classical ornament. Red

sandstone ashlar-coped rubble-built walls; square ashlar

gatepiers on east wall are corniced with shaped caps; spiked wrought-iron gates. Headstones mostly 18th-19th century, many

with fluted pilasters, urns, swags and pediments; tall cross

erected 1925 (D J Beattie & Son of Carlisle sculptors) a

memorial to 57 Nithsdale Covenanters.

Statement of Interest

Dalgarnoc parish annexed by Closeburn 1606; disjoined 1648

and rejoined circa 1671. Letter book relating to erection of

cross held at Hornel Library, Kirkcudbright.
