Description

James Gillespie Graham 1812. Tall granite obelisk to Henry Dundas, First Viscount Melville, Baron of Dunira (1742-1811).

Statement of Interest

Henry Dundas was a major figure in the political life of Scotland and the United Kingdom in the late 18th century. He bought the nearby Dunira estate in 1784 as a country retreat. The engraving on the monument states that it was erected "by his personal friends in the county of Perth".

In the 21st century Henry Dundas is a contentious figure in the history of colonialism and slavery and his surviving memorials are a focus in public debate about place-names, statues and monuments (2020).

James Gillespie Graham (1776-1855) was a prominent architect of the early 19th century, known mainly for his Gothic-style churches and castellated country houses.

Listed building record revised in 2020.
