Description

Circa 1700. T plan former church comprised of rectangular gabled hall church with round arched entrance doors centred in gables and 2 storey gabled aisle centred to rear (N). Lime harl pointed rubble walls with some stugged sandstone dressings.

S ELEVATION: near symmetrical; 4 bay elevation with inner bays offset to left; rubble infilled openings at ground and windows at upper level in inner bays, margined windows with chamfered arrises and iron shutter hinges in outer bays at ground only.

E GABLE: symmetrical; round arched margined door centred at ground, margined window with chamfered arrises in gable above. Aisle elevation recessed at right with single window to left at upper level.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: symmetrical; aisle gable at centre, stugged sandstone ashlar voussoirs to round arched entrance door centred at ground; architraved armorial panel to Gifford of Busta inscribed T G and E M, 1714, centred in gable above. Small square window at left in gablehead, remains of apex stack above.

W GABLE: matching E gable, margin of window; partially ruinous aisle elevation recessed at left with remains surviving of stone gallery stair in re entrant and lower portion of margined window at upper level to outer left.

INTERIOR: joist holes in N and S walls of hall evidence of timber galleries to E and W of centre; rubble infill centring N wall at upper level. Carved memorial slabs to E and W walls of aisle and fireplace at upper level in N gable.

KIRKYARD WALL, GATEPIERS AND ENCLOSURES: harl pointed rubble wall enclosing kirkyard to S and W; E wall with modern harl and cope. Square rubble gatepiers with pyramidal caps centring S wall. Rubble dwarf wall with stugged ashlar cope and cast iron railing of circa 1835 enclosing memorial to Adie family to S of church.

Statement of Interest

Roofless shell. Rubble infill centring the N hall wall suggests the upper level of the aisle was open to the hall with a Laird's gallery, possibly infilled later to form a vestry.
