Built circa 1800. Mausoleum in the form of a severe neo-classical pyramid-capped cube raised from a fosse with a circular enclosure. Grey ashlar. 2 steps to tetrastyle Tuscan porticoes on all 4 fronts, 1 doorway only to W in use. Rubble retaining wall with joggled ashlar coping. 2 large gatepiers to SW at entrance to enclosure with cornice, each surmounted by crouching slaves with flaying knives. Avenue running to 2nd pair of gatepiers 30 metres to the SW with cornice and cast-iron overthrow.
The Mausoleum was built by Francis, 5th Earl of Wemyss, 1723-1808, who died at Gosford on 24 August, 1808 and was "buried there in a mausoleum erected by himself". (Scots Peerage). The architect is not known. A-Group with other Gosford Estate buildings; see notes for Gosford House.
