Description

William Robertson, Elgin, 1829. Gothic mausoleum;
rectangular; coursed tooled pink granite, tooled and polished
ashlar sandstone dressings. Orientated E-W, with shallow
pointed and hoodmoulded recessed entrance in centre W gable;
similar headed Y-tracery window in E gable with small oculus
above; angle buttresses.
Canopied niche in centre of N and S elevations; canopies with
delicate cusped detailing and diminutive ribbed soffits
appear re-used. Corbelled base to each niche supporting
octagonal pedestal (pedestals also appear re-used).
Concave moulded eaves cornice carried up crowstepped gables
as continuous course. Apex crosses; Banffshire slate roof.

Statement of Interest

THE STATISTICAL ACCOUNT refers to former 16th century church

and disjoined burial aisle dated 1586. This had been intended

as a 'burying place to the then family of Ballindalloch'. An

appropriate site for new mausoleum commissioned by George

(later Sir George) MacPherson-Grant of Ballindalloch and

Invereshie who was buried there in 1846.
