Description

Dated 1773. S facing 2-storey and attic house over raised basement which is extended forward to form terrace fronting house and enclosed by cast-iron spearhead railings. Gable end to harbour. Harled frontage, rubble flanks and rear, ashlar dressings and margins. Centre entrance with moulded, lugged and corniced doorpiece, later 18th or early 19th century panelled door; margined front windows; 3 later 19th century

canted dormers; regular fenestration in W (seaward) gable; multi-pane glazing. Corniced end stacks; flat skews with scroll skewputts, each decorated with carved nautilus shell; slate roof; stone ridge.

Statement of Interest

Lintel of doorway inscribed 'James Rose Margaret Simson 1773'. Findhorn was the property of the Rose's of Kilravock (Nairnshire) from end of 17th century until sold to Sir Hector Munro of Novar in 1776, in whose family it remains today.

Nautilus shell decoration of skewputts is peculiar to Findhorn, Rafford (1776) and Forres (18th century and early 19th century examples). Similar panelled front doors survive in Forres.
