Description

1739. Single segmental-arched bridge. Red brick; rubble soffit; raised stone quoins. Hogback roadway; flat, coped parapets with 3 ball finials to each; scroll brackets at parapet terminations, carved with Stair Coat of Arms and Coronet, encircled by Collar of the Order of the Thistle; keystoned arch; curved coped brick quadrant walls.

Statement of Interest

The bridge crosses the canal between the two lochs and with the adjacent gatepiers, gates and boundary walls, forms an impressive entrance to Castle Kennedy (see separate list description). William Adam is known to have undertaken work to the gardens of Castle Kennedy between 1720 and 1740 and the bridge could possibly be to his design.
