Description

Later 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay farmhouse, with adjoining cheese loft; U-plan steading. Painted rubble.

Farmhouse:

E ELEVATION: painted brick margins. Painted projecting cills. Gabled porch at centre; door to S, window to E; timber spike finial. Regular fenestration.

S ELEVATION: window to left at ground floor. Single storey wing, with broad swept purple-slated roof, adjoined to left; door to outer left, and 3 windows. Cheese loft (see below) further adjoined to left.

W ELEVATION: single storey wing adjoined (see above).

Mainly 12-pane glazing in sash and case windows. Modern tiles. Painted rubble and brick stacks; gablehead to N and S, wallhead to right of centre to W.

CHEESE LOFT: door to left, and windows to left of centre and to right at ground floor to S; 2 small windows to left and right at 1st floor. Lean-to adjoined to W gable, with broad door to S. Coped skews, gablehead stacks and grey slates.

STEADING: U-plan; situated to S. Piended roofs; mainly grey slates; corrugated roofing to W range. 3 segmental-arched cart arches, with painted brick arch rings, to E of W range; forestair to loft door to left. Remains of water wheel and lade to right to W of W rage; high breastshot wheel (buckets missing); lade built up on painted rubble wall. Further piended range adjoined to E of E range.

Statement of Interest

Although a farm is marked at Kirkbride on the OS Map of 1848, the farmhouse and steading marked do not follow the plan form of the existing buildings.
