Description

Later 18th century. Extensive random rubble garden
walls approx 200 x 70m formerly lime-washed, enclosing
3 adjoining square gardens.
Doorways in each wall. Now accommodating nursery with
modern greenhouses.
2 detached sundials, probably relocated, sited to SE;
horizontal dial dated 1690; undated horizontal
octagonal dial mounted on octagonal pedestal, cup
hollows below with dials and gnomons.

Statement of Interest

Listed category B for particular reference to the

sundials. Smeaton House demolished 1949. The undated

dial is similar to that described by MacGibbon and Ross

as Nisbet Farm, Pencaitland.
