Description

17th century; circa 1958 conversion, I G Lindsay & Partners. 3-storey, 3-bay L-plan house; white harling; ashlar window and door surrounds. Gable faces onto Sandhaven.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical elevation. Wide central door; flanking windows. 3 1st and 2nd floor windows. National Trust for Scotland (NTS) plaque above door. Sundial between 1st and 2nd window at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: small windows; central ground floor window; window above to left; 1st floor window to right; central 2nd floor window. Roll-moulded door to left return; 1st floor window above. Rear wing set back to left; door to right; window attached to left of door. Central door; small square window to far left. 2 1st floor windows; 2 2nd floor catslide dormer windows.

N ELEVATION: plain gable; raggles of former building.

E ELEVATION: small ground floor window to centre right. 5 1st floor windows including small square 1st floor window to far left and between 2nd and 3rd window. 4 2nd floor catslide dormer windows.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Chamfered surrounds to most windows. Replacement timber studded doors. Pitched roof; crowstepped gables. Corniced gable apex stacks; corniced ridge stack.

WALL

Tall rubble wall runs from NE gable northwards.

INTERIOR: rear door leads to stone turnpike stair. Modernised interiors (circa 1958).

Statement of Interest

Many of the properties in Culross were named after the owner's name, as is the case here. The ground floor was once a dairy; cowsheds were attached to N gable and the yard was a farmyard. The building was converted into flats in the late 1950's by I G Lindsay & Partners for the NTS. The ground and 1st floor are given to one flat with access from the ground floor door in the S elevation. Access from the rear turnpike stair has been blocked at 1st floor and provides access to the 2nd floor flat. The building overlooks the Sandhaven, formerly a harbour, which was reclaimed in the late 19th century. For brief history of Culross Burgh see Culross, The Cross, The Study.
