Description

Earlier-mid 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay villa. E elevation stugged squared and coursed ashlar, remaining elevations squared and snecked rubble; ashlar dressings. Base course. Eaves cornice and blocking course, tablet over centre bay. Raised margins.

E (ESKBANK ROAD) ELEVATION: corniced doorpiece, with foliated brackets, rosettes and angled tablet above, at centre; modern glazed door and 2-pane fanlight. Canted window at ground in bay to left; cornice, blocking course and nook-shaft detail to angles. Regularly disposed fenestration, taller windows at ground. Fenestrated ashlar single storey single bay, later 19th century addition to right.

N ELEVATION: ashlar addition adjoined at ground to left and centre; cornice and blocking course continuous around canted window at centre; bay recessed to right (centre) with small intercepted window. window to left and right at 1st floor, and to right at ground.

S ELEVATION: glass house running S adjoined to right. Lean-to conservatory adjoined to left; wall rendered and painted inside conservatory with door to left of centre.

W ELEVATION: window to 1st floor and lean-to to bay with glazed door to right. 2-storey piended rubble wing adjoined across rest of elevation; slightly advanced to right; boarded door and window to left and lean-to coal bunker to right to N; W and S elevations fenestrated; stack below ridge to left of centre on W pitch.

Largely 12-pane glazing pattern in sash and case windows; 15-pane with 10-pane side lights in canted window to N. Grey slates to piend and platform roof. Shouldered wallhead stacks at centre to N and S.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: ashlar coped rubble retaining wall; pyramidal-capped corniced gatepiers.

Statement of Interest

B Group with Nos 40, 44, 46 and 48 Eskbank Road, and Nos 1, and 2 Avenue Road. This villa was built sometime between 1835 and 1853.
