Description

Mid 18th century country house, considerably altered and
extended in 1899-1900. Dick Peddie and Washington Browne.
2-storey, basement and attic. Rectangular main block with
neo-Georgian wings. Red sandstone rubble with ashlar
dressings, raised base course, rusticated quoins to wings,
eaves cornice, slate roof.
S ENTRANCE FRONT: symmetrical; 5 recessed bays flanking
advanced gabled wings with 4-light canted windows basement to
1st floor and Venetian windows in gable heads. Moulded
architraves to door and windows. Open pedimented Roman Doric
doorpiece. Panelled double doors and decorative semi-circular
fanlight. 12-pane glazing pattern. Flight of steps with short
balustrade at top. Balustraded basement area with eagle
statues on end dies. Three 4-light timber dormers with
pediments over centre lights (1899-1900).
E AND W SIDE ELEVATIONS: 3 light bowed bays to ground floor,
2 dormers as at front. Further bow on W side abutting
extension block to N.
REAR ELEVATION: random window arrangement. Mullioned,
lead-paned stair window inserted 1900. Slate hung piended
dormers. Extension to W with lower eaves line and piend roof.
Partly harled. Extension to E later, harled, 2-storey and
basement block with corner turret, mansard attic, slated.
INTERIOR: some 18th century interior work remaining, mixed
with refurbishment of 1900. Original cantilevred oval stair;
unusual wrought-iron balustrade and timber hand rail.
Decorative fanlights and curved double panelled doors in
vestibule. Fluted panelled shutters. Decorative Adamesque
plasterwork and classical chimneypieces with marble slips to
main ground floor rooms.
STABLES: 1899-1900 with later alterations. Dick Peddie and
Washington Browne. Single-storey and attic U-plan stables
with walls enclosing courtyard. Red sandstone rubble with
raised band course and window margins. Slated roofs.
E-W BLOCK: raised, with wave-topped dormers to courtyard.
Arched carriage entrance to left of courtyard; windows to
right.
E BLOCK: doubling as Lodge by gates to Back Road. E, front
with 2-light and 3-light windows; arched doorway with
hoodmould. Two 4-light timber dormers with semi-circular
gable heads above centre.
W BLOCK: stable openings altered for habitation. Hay loft
dormer in N courtyard corner. S gable upper door blocked and
altered to window with stair removed.
WALLED GARDEN: 18th century. Red sandstone rubble walls
abutting Back Road. Gibbsian open pedimented doorpiece,
centre S wall, on Doric columns. Decorative wrought-iron work
in arch and upper door.
BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: red sandstone rubble walls to N
and S. Coped quadrant walls and square capped ashlar piers to
S. Circular rubble piers with quadrant walls to N.
LODGE: 1899-1900. Dick Peddie and Washington Browne with
later extension to E.
Single storey L-plan made Z-plan by extension.
Squared snecked sandstone rubble; ashlar dressings. Harled
new work. Entrance porch in W re-entrant angle. 12 pane
glazing pattern. Piended slate roof.

Statement of Interest

Formerly known as Winterfield House. Pair of flanking

pavilion wings to original house, demolished by 1899.
