Description

J Jerdan and Son, 1910. 2 storey, rectangular block with

single storey extension to N. Squared, coursed sandstone

rubble, with ashlar dressings and cill course on ground floor

entrance facade. Westmoreland slates to piended roof broken

by gables; end stacks and roof stacks from below ridge to W.

E ENTRANCE ELEVATION: advanced stairblock with mullion and

transom multi-light window topped by wave-coped ashlar

parapet. Flanking gables breaking eaves with scrolled

pedimental heads to 1st floor windows. Balustraded porch in

re-entrant angle N of stair block; bolection moulded

architrave, panelled double doors within with upper panels

glazed. Multi-pane sashes, single 2 or 3-lights symmetrical.

Rear W elevation to main 3-bay block; gabled end sections

with full-height canted bays. Pediment panel over central 1st

floor window, with dormer behind parapet. Small arched

windows in gable heads.

Slate roofs to ground floor canted bays on S face. Chimney

wallhead gable; scroll decoration.

Buttressed terrace wall addition of 1913 by J Jerdan & Son.

INTERIOR: Mahogany panelling to hall, with convex fireplace

bay, tiled surround timber ceiling beams, staircase and light bannisters. Built-in cabinets in Dining Room. Broad low

timber arch and arched passage in hall. Decoration plaster

cornices.

Statement of Interest

Commissioned by David Livingstone Bowe, potato merchant,

along with Bield and Gardener's Cottage. Supposedly on site

of former Carmelite Friary. Remains of former double wall of

'Monks' Walk' extending NW by terrace, leading to Friar's

Croft.
