J Dick Peddie & George Washington Browne, architects. Built
1897. 3-storey 5-bay bank. Pink sandstone ashlar. High Street
elevation symmetrical above ground floor, with 2-storey
canted oriels rising above eaves in outer bays. Basket-arched
door with moulded reveals in central and in right bays,
former enriched with foliate decoration (similar ornament at
eaves) and blind arcading, latter with ogival hood-mould;
large lintelled opening fills intermediate bay; central and
right bays each flanked by panelled Corinthian pilasters.
Mullioned and transomed windows with depressed-arched lights,
recessed in rectangular panels. String courses between
floors; cill course to 2nd floor. Low parapet, 2 tall,
corniced, symmetrically placed wall-head stacks, additional
end stacks on twin gables; slated roof. 3-storey piended wing
extends southwards by 4 bays and additional modern bay in
T-plan. Simple interior.
Built for the British Linen Bank who first opened their
Dumbarton office in 1884.
