Description

James Barbour of Dumfries. Dated 1866. Gothic church with
main gable to street with curvilinear tracery to openings
and to door tympanum. Recessed semi-octagonal stair turrets
flank nave; shallow 2-light transepts. Stugged red coursers,
polished dressings. Central painted doorway with nook-shafts,
on main gabled elevation, flanked by circular openings and
with engaged tall, finialled shallow buttress over; 2 tall
windows; pinnacled angle buttresses; parapet with cusped
detailing; belfry finial on solid square base. Slated roofs,
facetted over stair turrets.
Interior: gallery with decorative and stencilled front to 3
sides supported on cast-iron columns; upper tier of columns
support shallow arches below roof; arched recess to apse
behind organ; octagonal pulpit. Ribbed ceiling with angle
brackets.

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Originally Maxwelltown free church. Foundation stone laid 6.7.1865; opened 15.11.1866.
