Description

Francis Armstrong, 1880. Classical, 2-storey elevations, rectangular-plan free-standing; set within garden area on

corner of Catherine Street. Polished red ashlar front

returned 1 bay, remainder of flanks and rear bull-faced.

Symmetrical elevation to Newall Terrace: 7 bays with pediment

over projecting 3-bay centre. Moulded plinth; channelled

ground floor; coupled Roman Doric pilasters at angles above,

supporting heavy entablature and parapet. 3 central doors

flanked by piers enclosing 2 steps. Thomsonesque treatment of

flanks, 2 5-window pilastrades over 3 single lights. Narrower

outshot at back with 2-storey flanking office buildings

filling the angles. Thomsonesque T-pattern window divide.

Slate roofs.

Set behind low red ashlar boundary with square piers.

Statement of Interest

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Foundation stone laid

23.2.1880.
