Description

Early to earlier 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan farmhouse with tall 1st floor. Squared and coursed sandstone with ashlar margins and dressings; raised cills; quoins; base course; limewashed rubble at rear.

S (MAIN) ELEVATION: 3 symmetrical bays with 2-bay single storey block to outer right. 6-panelled door at centre, umbrella fanlight; ashlar architrave. Flanking windows; windows symmetrically disposed at 1st floor. Slightly-recessed, single storey block to outer right; modern French door at left, window to outer right.

N (REAR) ELEVATION: 3-bay main block with projecting, single storey, 3-bay, flat-roofed block attached to left and centre. Windows symmetrically disposed on main block; bipartite window to outer left of addition; door with bipartite window to outer left and narrow window to outer right on right return.

12-pane sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; ashlar coping to skews; coped, rendered apex stacks. Ashlar coping at flat-roofed addition.

INTERIOR: not seen 1993.

BOUNDARY WALL: farmhouse bounded on S side (Lanark Road West) by rubble wall with boulder semicircular coping; wall curves in forming entrance at centre.

Statement of Interest

Newmills farmhouse was likely owned by the Davidsons of the nearby Newmills house. Newmills House is listed separately.
