Gabled rear wall, shaped side gables and lean-to roof. 2 barred doors to S wall; 2 rectangular openings above continuous projecting rat-course. Rounded eaves course and moulded eaves gutter. 2 gabled openings in roof.

INTERIOR: lined with 1,965 stone nesting boxes.

WALL: remains of tall rubble wall with heavy buttresses to N.

Statement of Interest

Group with Hermitage of Braid and ice house. The dovecot is the second largest in Edinburgh. It originally stood within a walled vegetable garden, of which remains of the wall survive. As part of the earlier castle on the site, it was possibly upgraded by the addition of stone urns to the corners and pediment (all of which ar now lost) when the present house was built. Further double lectern dovecots in the vicinity can be found an Newliston, Pilmuir and Inch House dovecot, Liberton.
