Description

Probably Thomas Bonnar, early 19th century. 4-storey and basement, 9-bay terraced tenement. Broached ashlar sandstone; V-jointed rustication at principal floor; coursed rubble with droved dressings to N elevation. Band courses between basement and principal floor, principal floor and 1st floor; projecting cills to 1st and 2nd floor windows; continuous cornice at 2nd floor; cornice and blocking course at 3rd floor. Ashlar steps and entrance platts oversailing basement.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 9-panel timber common stair door, with glazed upper panels, in round-arched doorpiece, with radial semicircular fanlight, flanked by windows, flanked in turn by 9-panel timber doors, door to left (No 76) in round-arched doorpiece, with radial semicircular fanlight, door to right (No 69) with glazed panels at centre, plate glass rectangular fanlight; windows in remaining bays at principal floor, regular fenestration to floors above, with anthemion and palmette window guards in 4 bays to right at 2nd floor, window guards in 4 bays to left and right at 3rd floor. Advanced 2-bay corniced shop front to left at basement, comprising plate glass windows, with glazed door to right.

N (CUMBERLAND STREET) ELEVATION: 6-bay at basement,becoming 35-37 Cumberland Street, comprising flush-panelled door in penultimate bay from left, with 4-pane rectangular fanlight; window to outer left; 4-bay corniced return to shop front at right, with windows in each bay; regular fenestration to basement; windows centred to floors above.

S ELEVATION: adjoining terrace, see separate listing (53-65 Dundas Street).

E (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular fenestration to all floors.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate M-roof. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Broached ashlar gablehead and ridge stacks; coped, with circular cans.

RAILINGS: ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings, with spear-headed balusters and urn finials, enclosing garden area to rear.

Statement of Interest

Part of the Second New Town A Group, a significant surviving part of one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain. 67-77 Dundas Street was formerly 11-15A Pitt Street.
