Description

1784-90; 20th century alterations at ground and internally. 3-storey basement and attic, 5-bay former classical tenement on corner site. Ground floor partly built out as shops. Polished cream ashlar sandstone (stonecleaned) with coursed rubble gable end; cill course to 1st and 2nd floors; eaves cornice. Modern plate glass shops at ground flanking central door to upper floors, with lead canopy, enveloping corner. 3 flagpoles attached at 2nd floor. 3 modern gabled timber dormers. Irregular 3-bay return with stair windows at centre, above fine arched doorway with keystone, cornice and radiating fanlight; reconstructed 3-storey and attic 3-bay block to E, with public bar at ground, 5 windows at 1st floor, pair of tripartite windows at 2nd floor, pair of canted dormers and broad return gable to Rose Street North Lane.

Timber sash and case 12-pane windows. Ashlar coped skews; ashlar apex stack (rebuilt and rendered to N); grey slates.

RAILINGS AND LAMP STANDARDS: cast-iron railings and modern reproduction lamp standards.

Statement of Interest

Refurbished 1993/4. A Group with Nos 45-49 (odd nos) Hanover Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh?s New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
